Who we are
FabIS Shop Floor (“the app”) is made by FabIS LLC (“FabIS”, “we”, “us”), which is responsible for the information described here. The app is for people who work in steel fabrication shops, and it works with Tekla PowerFab. This policy covers the app on iPhone and iPad.
The short version
- The app mainly talks to your shop’s own Tekla PowerFab server, over your shop’s network. What you read and record there goes to that server, not to us.
- You sign in with your own PowerFab username and password. They go only to your shop’s server. If you choose to stay signed in, the app keeps that login in the iPhone and iPad Keychain, your device’s secure storage.
- The FabIS cloud receives a short list of things, set out below: a way to recognise your phone and you, the time you record, shop check records, a photo of a bill of lading when you ask the app to read one, and the reports you send, or the app sends, when something goes wrong.
- No advertising, no tracking, and we do not sell information about you.
Your PowerFab login and your shop’s server
When you sign in to PowerFab, your PowerFab username and password are sent only to your shop’s PowerFab server. Everything you then do in the app against PowerFab — looking up pieces, moving them through stations, recording inspections and their photos, receiving material, opening drawings — is read from and written to that server. FabIS does not run that server and does not receive this information. Your shop decides how it is kept. No PowerFab password and no PowerFab session ever reaches the FabIS cloud.
If you choose to stay signed in, your PowerFab login is stored on your device, encrypted and held in the Keychain. It is not stored anywhere else.
What goes to FabIS, and why
Apart from the two features described in their own sections below, the FabIS cloud receives only the following, and some of it only if your shop uses the feature:
- Recognising you and your phone. The first time you sign in to PowerFab on a device, the app sends FabIS the user identifier PowerFab gave your login, once, to connect the phone to your shop, together with an identifier the app makes for its own installation. FabIS answers with a token that the phone keeps in the Keychain. Your office’s FabIS Hub sends a scrambled list of the shop’s active PowerFab users so FabIS can recognise them. FabIS stores only a keyed hash, never the identifier itself, deletes it 90 days after the person leaves the shop’s list, and uses it for nothing else.
- A FabIS account email, if your phone is signed in to a FabIS account (More → FabIS account).
- Time entries, where your shop uses Time: the job, station, piece, and when you started and finished, with your PowerFab employee number.
- Shop checks, where your shop uses them: your answers, notes and the photos you attach.
We use this information to provide the app to your shop. Your shop’s office sees the time recorded through FabIS in the FabIS Hub.
Reading a piece mark from a photo
On iPhone and iPad, reading a piece mark from a photo happens on your device, using Apple’s Vision. No photo of a piece mark is sent anywhere to be read: not to FabIS, and not to any other company.
Reading a bill of lading from a photo
In Receiving, Scan bill of lading reads the paper that came with a delivery — a bill of lading, packing slip or delivery ticket — and checks it against the order. This is different from piece marks, and it does leave your phone:
- The app takes the photo, and sends it, only when you tap Scan bill of lading, one photo each time. iOS asks for your permission before the app may use the camera.
- The photo goes to the FabIS cloud, which passes it to Anthropic, the maker of the Claude AI service, to read the lines printed on the paper. Anthropic acts on FabIS’s behalf for this and sends back text, which the FabIS cloud returns to your phone. Anthropic’s own privacy policy is at anthropic.com/privacy.
- The read is available only where your shop has turned FabIS Intelligence on.
- FabIS does not store or log the photo or the text read from it. The only thing FabIS records is that a read happened: which shop and person asked, when, how long it took and how large it was.
- The phone keeps no photo. It does keep the text that came back, for the last three papers, so that a problem with a read can be looked into. If you send a report from Receiving (below), that text goes with it.
Send feedback, and error reports
Under More, Send feedback lets you tell FabIS something is wrong or could be better. The app can also send a report by itself when it hits an error. Both go to the FabIS cloud.
What a report you send holds: the words you type (up to 4,000 characters), up to three photos you choose to take, and a few facts about your phone and where you were in the app.
What an automatic report holds: the same facts, with no words and no photos. The app sends one when it hits an uncaught error, at most once an hour for the same error and twenty a day, and it does not ask first.
The facts:
- the app’s version, and your device’s type, system and screen size;
- your shop’s identifier, and your PowerFab employee number, name and how you are signed in;
- whether the phone is online, whether it reaches your shop’s server, and when its copy of the shop’s data was last refreshed;
- the screen you were on, the last ten things you did in the app (their titles and details), the last errors the app noted, and how many records are waiting to be sent and the sentences the server gave for any it refused;
- if you send it from Receiving, the text read from your last three bills of lading (see above).
The app removes anything that looks like a password, token or other secret before it sends a report, and the cloud checks again. A report that cannot be sent right away is kept on the phone and sent when the connection returns.
FabIS stores each report in the FabIS cloud, with any photos, against your shop, and emails it to the FabIS staff who look after Shop Floor, through an email delivery service. We use reports to find and fix problems and to answer you.
What the app does not do
- No advertising and no advertising identifiers.
- No tracking. The app has no analytics or tracking software, and it does not follow you across other companies’ apps and websites. The error reports above are FabIS’s own and go only to FabIS.
- No location. The app does not ask for or use your location.
- It does not read your contacts or use your microphone. The camera is used only when you point it at a piece, scan a code or take a photo in the app, and your photo library only when you choose a photo from it.
- We do not sell information about you or share it for advertising.
The demo shop
“Try the demo shop” runs an invented shop built into the app. Nothing you do in the demo leaves your device.
Kept on your device
The app keeps your sign-in; work and photos waiting to be sent; reports waiting to be sent; the text of your last three bill of lading reads; and shop information saved so the app keeps working when the network drops.
You can remove your stored sign-in by signing out in the app. Deleting the app removes the rest of what it stored on your device.
Security
Connections to the FabIS cloud are encrypted (HTTPS). Your shop’s PowerFab server is run by your shop, which is responsible for the security of its own network and server.
Your choices, and deleting your information
- To ask what FabIS holds about you, or to have it corrected or deleted, email [email protected]. Tell us your shop’s name and how you use the app, and we will deal with it, unless the law requires us to keep something.
- The app does not create an account: you sign in with the PowerFab login your shop gave you.
- Records your shop keeps in its own PowerFab system belong to your shop. Ask your shop about those.
Children
The app is for people at work in fabrication shops. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will post the new version at this address and change the date at the top. If a change is significant — for example, if the app started sending piece photos to the cloud to be read — we will say so in the app. An Android version of the app is in development; this policy will be updated before it is released.
